Leadership team

The executive leadership team (ELT) is Visa's most senior internal decision-making body in Europe. It acts as an oversight body for the separate business units (scheme, processing and non-regulated business) which are managed autonomously and report separately to the ELT. All meetings are held in line with the organisation’s code of conduct.

Charlotte Hogg

Charlotte Hogg

Chief Executive Officer, Europe

Charlotte Hogg is executive vice president and chief executive officer for Visa’s European operations.

Charlotte brings more than 25 years of experience in financial services, bank operations and management consulting to Visa. Most recently served as chief operating officer for the Bank of England, from 2013 to 2017. Prior to that role, she led retail distribution for Santander in the UK and previously worked at Experian as the managing director of U.K. and Irish operations.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Hogg was a managing director for strategy and planning at Morgan Stanley, and a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, based in the U.S.

Ms. Hogg graduated from the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and History. She is a Kennedy Memorial Trust Scholar from Harvard University, and has an honorary Doctor of Laws from Warwick University.

Nick Atkinson

Chief Officer , Technology Operations

Nick is a technology leader with over twenty years of industry experience and an exceptional background in architecture and solution delivery. Within Visa, Nick has led the development of architecture and design across all of Visa European systems and has played a wider role in creating and developing the IT team.

As a consultant for Accenture and IBM, Nick worked with a number of blue chip organizations, including the London Stock Exchange, Lloyds Bank and Visa. During this time, he created the architectures and technical designs of high profile programmes and saw them through to successful implementation.

Nick aims to benefit businesses and consumers by developing innovative, reliable and secure technical solutions. He aspires to widen his influence in this area, leading a broad team of people towards bigger goals and better results.

Norman Butler

Norman Butler

Chief Officer, European Scheme Business

Norman leads the European Scheme Business at Visa and is a member of the European Executive Leadership Team. Norman is responsible for the strategy, commercial development and operations of the Scheme Business. The Scheme role is to enable access to the Visa brand, scheme rules and standards for all parties in our eco system to enable seamless, secure and global commerce to take place between consumers and merchants.

Norman joined Visa in 1997 and has held a number of roles in Visa covering processing, scheme, innovation and transformational change, and has a broad expertise in payments. Most recently he was responsible for European Strategy and Corporate Development

Norman holds an Honours Degree in Economics from Brunel University, London.

Stefaan D’Hoore

Stefaan D’Hoore

Chief Officer, Risk & Compliance

Stefaan is the Chief Officer, Risk & Compliance for Visa in Europe, the worldwide leader in electronic payments, which he joined in 2017. In this role, Stefaan is responsible for managing Enterprise Risk, Regulatory Compliance and oversight of the Payment Systems Risk.

Stefaan has over 20 years of risk management experience in credit, operational, market and enterprise risk management. He also held various business roles where he was involved in acquisition and integration, process improvement and growth initatives.

Before joining Visa, Stefaan was with GE Captial where he served for 20 years. Most recently, he was the Chief Operating Officer for risk management covering GE Capital’s activities in Europe and Asia. Prior to this, he has held various Chief Risk Officer roles within business units both in France and the United States. Stefaan joined GE through its Corporate Audit Staff team executing audit missions around the world. Stefaan started his career at JP Morgan where he was an account manager for Global Custody clients.

Stefaan is a native of Belgium and holds a Law degree cum laude from the University of Leuven and an MBA from the Vlerick School of Management.

Adrian Farina

Adrian Farina

Senior Vice President, Marketing

Adrian Farina is Senior Vice President of Marketing for Europe, having joined Visa in 2012.

In this role, Mr. Farina is responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies by country, product and channel in the region. He also leads Visa’s marketing efforts to activate the sponsorship of the world’s biggest sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and Olympics.

He has over 20 years of marketing experience, working in the fields of consumer goods, fast food and retail services to leading companies in Latin America and now in Europe. Throughout his career, Adrian has worked both on the advertiser and the agency side.

Before joining Visa, Adrian was part of Saatchi & Saatchi X, where he led the business expansion in Latin America by opening offices in Miami, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Previously, Adrian served for 10 years in the marketing department of Procter & Gamble (with both regional and local responsabilities) in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela. His experience also includes Ripley Marketing Management in Chile, and the marketing department of Pizza Hut in Argentina.

Adrian is a graduate of the University of Palermo (Argentina) and holds a bachelor's degree in Marketing.

Bill Gajda

Bill Gajda

Global Head, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships

Bill Gajda is the Global Head of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, responsible for Visa’s Innovation programs and activities in Europe and CEMEA. He is also responsible for Visa’s global relationships with Mobile Operators and leads the ‘Visa Ready’ and Venture Capital programs. He began at Visa as the Global Head for Visa Mobile, responsible for Visa’s mobile product and commercial strategies and activities.

Prior to joining Visa, he was Chief Commercial Officer for the GSMA. In this role he was responsible for business development, as well as led the GSMA’s Mobile Money, Mobile Innovation, Mobile Advertising and Strategic Partner Programs. Bill was previously Chief Marketing Officer at the GSMA, where he was responsible for the Mobile World Congress, as well as marketing, corporate communications and member services.

He has held other executive positions elsewhere in the telecom sector, including: Vice President, Corporate and Marketing Communications for TELUS Corporation, Vice President, Communications for Bell Canada International and Global Brand Director for Ericsson in Stockholm. His first career was in the Canadian public service, where he directed communications on constitutional affairs, international trade and environmental issues.

Jose Souto Gonzalez

Chief Officer, Finance

Jose has over 25 years of professional experience in accounting, finance and treasury, including more than 10 years at Visa where he gained a deep understanding of the payments industry and Visa’s business model.

Prior to beginning this role in Europe, Jose was responsible for the Visa Inc./Visa Europe integration project. Having joined Visa in 2002 as VP Finance for the Latin-America and Caribbean (LAC) region, he soon progressed to Chief Financial Officer of the LAC region in 2004. In this role he was responsible for all financial activities in the region including tax, financial planning and analysis, accounting, treasury and procurement.

Prior to joining Visa, Jose was the Director of Finance and Information Technology at Kodak Polychrome Graphics Latin America, where he led all aspects of the finance and IT function.

Tom Houghton

Chief Officer, Processing Payments

Tom is head of Visa's European Processing Business responsible for business strategy, planning and operations. The Visa Processing business provides its customers with access to the unrivalled processing capability of the global Visa network. The 24x7 processing service is proven in terms of speed, reliability and security.

Operating separately from the Scheme business, Processing manages the switching of payments instructions between card issuers and payment acquirers with authorisations and payment clearing and settlement services across the Visa network, providing global acceptance through its partnership with Visa Inc. Processing enables domestic and international transactions of card-based payments made at the physical point-of-sale (POS) or ATM, and continually innovates to drive and facilitate the increasing trend of consumers and merchants towards e- and m-commerce.

Tom has over 25 years’ experience in the payments industry. Prior to joining the Executive Leadership Team at Visa he worked in the retail sector for a US based chain and a leading payments technology provider to acquirers, issuers and third party processors. He has held a variety of roles across Europe and the Americas, leading information technology, product management, client support, professional services and sales divisions.

Tom holds a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Technical Services from Bellevue University.

William Ingham

Bill Ingham

Chief Officer, Organisation Design & HR

In this role, Bill sets the people and talent strategy to drive business for employees across Europe. Additionally, he drives the people and talent strategy for global marketing and communications. Prior to moving to Europe, he was Vice President for Global Human Resources in San Francisco. He sat on the executive leadership teams for Global Marketing & Communications, Global Strategy & Government Relations, Legal & Compliance, and Human Resources.

Prior to Visa, he led International HR for the Banana Republic Brand at Gap Inc. Before joining Gap, he spent 8 years with the Clorox Company where he led the people and talent strategy for a multi-billion dollar global business unit. Earlier in his career, Bill was with PeopleSoft where he built the strategy for PeopleSoft's Human Resources Business Process Outsourcing (HRBPO) division in addition to leading Global Staffing where his team hired as many as 4,000 people per year. Bill started his career at Oracle as the first compensation analyst for the company.

As one of the authors of The Rise of HR (distributed to over 2 million HR professionals), Bill is a frequent speaker at business and talent conferences and active in diversity and inclusion efforts, especially those dedicated to gender equality. He attended the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario, Canada and Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. He holds degrees in Communications and Psychology.

Mike Lemberger

Mike Lemberger

Head of Product & Solutions, Europe

Mike leads the European Product and Solutions Delivery group focused on developing and advancing new and existing products that support today’s payments and digital commerce ecosystem. He has 20 years of experience in product and database design, development and implementation, and has managed the integration of custom data solutions across multiple industries, including: travel, lodging, dining, retail, communications, and entertainment.

Prior to joining Visa, Lemberger was Vice President of Analytic Capabilities and Data Partnerships for American Express Business Insights. Lemberger spent five years at GE Capital leading the Decision Sciences Infrastructure group, deploying data and insights across GE’s global consumer lending business. He started his career at American Management Systems (now CGI) delivering system and strategy consulting to global communication companies, including: British Telecom, Telstra, AT&T, and Verizon. Mike holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and System Engineering from Rutgers University.

Ian Lundberg

Ian Lundberg

Chief Officer, SVP Client Services, Europe

Ian became the Chief Officer, SVP Client Services Europe on May 1st 2018 and is responsible for leading all Client Services activities in the region, including: client readiness for new product launches and ongoing client operational support, implementation services, cardholder disputes, and client testing and configuration. More specifically, this role provides functional and technical leadership for all operational activities with Visa clients including cross-functional delivery of systems and services.

Prior to joining Visa, Ian worked at American Express, where he held a number of SVP and General Manager leadership positions in customer service, operational risk, business transformation and growth, focusing on consumer, corporate, small business and merchant customers.

Ian holds a Bachelors of Science (with Honors) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology and is a Chartered Accountant.

Jeni Mundy

Regional Managing Director, UK & Ireland

Jeni is Regional Managing Director, UK & Ireland, at Visa. In her role, which she has held since October 2018, Jeni is responsible for growing Visa’s business in the strategically important UK and Ireland cluster, focusing on retaining key clients, growing new business, deepening partnerships and strengthening brand visibility.

She was at Vodafone Group PLC until 2018, most recently as Group Enterprise Product Management Director responsible for the business product portfolio worldwide. Jeni’s prior roles included Northern Europe Sales Director for multi-national customers, Chief Technology Officer (‘CTO’) for Vodafone UK and a UK Executive Board member and CTO New Zealand, on the New Zealand Executive Board. Jeni joined Vodafone in 1998.

Since 2016 Jeni has also been a Non-Executive Director for Auto Trader PLC.

Jeni started her career as a Telecommunications Engineer with BellSouth in New Zealand, having first achieved distinction as a professional yachtswoman competing in two Whitbread Round the World Yacht Races and was a member of the first ever all-female crew.

She holds a BSc in Maths with Philosophy from the University of East Anglia and an MSc in Electronic Engineering from Cardiff University, Wales, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers.

Shirish Puranik

Shirish Puranik

Vice President, Cybersecurity Europe Integration and Global IAM

Shirish is a technologist with over 20+ years of experience. He currently serves at Visa as Vice President, Cybersecurity Europe Integration and Global IAM. He was most recently Vice President of IAM Development with Oracle, building industry leading IAM products and core IAM cloud services for the Oracle Cloud. Prior to that, he was at 2 startups: as EVP Engineering at StrongMail (acquired by Selligent), part of the team that grew the company from a startup to a profitable company with 500+ customers; and prior to that as VP Software at @Road (acquired by Trimble), part of the team that grew the company from a startup to a profitable public company with $60m in revenues. Earlier to that, he was a director of engineering at Oracle in the database group.

Shirish has a master’s degree in engineering management from Stanford University, a master’s degree in electrical (computer) engineering from University of Florida, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.

Elvira Swanson

Elvira Schachermeier

Chief Officer, Communications

Elvira is the Chief Communications Officer for Visa in Europe. In this role she is responsible for protecting and enhancing Visa’s reputation amongst all of its stakeholders in Europe, and advising the CEO and board of directors.

Prior to moving to Europe, Elvira was Vice President of global corporate communications at Visa Inc. In this role, she oversaw all corporate communication efforts in support of Visa’s global reputation as the leading brand in payments, including corporate media engagement, crisis and issues management, security and technology communications, public affairs and financial literacy programs. In previous roles at Visa, Schachermeier also directed the public relations programs for key innovation initiatives, such as the launch of Visa Checkout, Apple Pay and mVisa, Visa’s mobile payment scheme in emerging markets.

Prior to joining Visa, Elvira was director of communications at Inovant, Visa’s shared services organization serving the Visa Regions and its member banks with technology development and transactions processing. From 2002 to 2005 she directly supported the president and chief information officer of Inovant.

From 1996 to 2002 Elvira was Group Director at Wilson McHenry Company, a public relations agency serving high tech clients in the San Francisco Bay Area. Elvira speaks German and graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Broadcast Communications Arts.

Smriti Sinha

Smriti Sinha

Chief Officer, Strategy & Corporate Development

Smriti Sinha leads the European Strategy & Corporate Development division at Visa. This includes the development of corporate and business strategy, planning, and investment tracking for the business. Smriti also oversees all corporate development activities and participation in key industry bodies and forums.

Smriti joined Visa in 2011, initially working in the Strategy team and then forming and leading the CEO Office. Prior to Visa, Smriti held a variety of roles in the US and UK financial services sectors. She began her career as an analyst in a US-based private equity fund-of-funds, where she analysed and recommended investments to multi-billion dollar pension funds, representing some of the largest institutional investors in the country. She then went onto lead a team of analysts at Moody's Investors Service, assessing credit and investment risk within the Structured Finance group. Smriti held strategy and executive office roles at State Street Bank in London before joining Visa.

Smriti holds a Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from London Business School.

Emma Slatter

Emma Slatter

Chief Officer, Legal and Regulatory

Emma joined Visa in March 2017 as General Counsel, leading a team of lawyers advising the UK and European offices on all aspects of their business.

Before joining Visa, Emma spent 20 years in various roles within the legal team at Deutsche Bank, including six years as the General Counsel (UK/Western Europe) and most recently as the Global Head of Legal Strategy. Prior to Deutsche Bank, Emma trained at Slaughter and May law firm, working as an associate in the corporate, banking and commercial team.
