Get cash safely
Here are some useful tips for whenever you're withdrawing cash from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM):
- When you get to the ATM, have your Visa card ready to use.
- Make sure you’re not overlooked by anyone who can see you key in your PIN.
- Put your cash, card and receipt away immediately you’ve finished – don’t stand there counting the notes.
- If the cash machine swallows your card or damages it, contact the bank of organisation that issued it to you straight away. They’ll arrange to replace it.
- If strangers say they can help, say no.
- Look around you, especially at night. If the cash machine is in a concealed place or poorly lit, use another one.
- If the ATM is in a booth and you have to swipe your card to get in, don’t let strangers follow you.
- If you drive to the cash machine, don’t leave keys or valuables in the car. Don’t leave the engine running.
- If you use a drive-through cash machine, keep the car doors locked and the other windows closed.
- Take your ATM receipts – check them against your monthly statements. It’s a good safeguard against fraud. And if you see a mistake, tell your bank so they can put it right.
- Cover your hand when entering your PIN
