Currency conversion
Some of your foreign customers might like the opportunity to pay in their own local currency. This can be done – using a point-of-sale service called Dynamic Currency Conversion, or DCC.
DCC is popular in many travel and entertainment sectors such as hotels, restaurants and fashion stores – and is increasingly common in other merchant sectors.
Visa does not provide DCC but you can offer it through your acquiring bank, or an approved third party service provider.
DCC is an optional service. If you do provide DCC, the process must be completely open and transparent to your customers. They must be offered a choice – this protects the customer's rights and the reputation of all parties involved in the transaction.
DCC rules
Visa rules strictly govern how DCC is offered to customers. This ensures that cardholders are given a real choice and there is full transparency on fees and charges.Merchants’ transaction slips must show:
- The original amount in the merchant’s currency
- The amount in the cardholder's home currency
- The exchange rate and its source
- Any fees, commission or charges applied within the exchange rate or applied separately to the final transaction currency amount
- A declaration that the cardholder has been given choice
