Minimising fraud
Merchants are at the front line in the fight against card crime. But with the support of your own bank, the card issuing banks and Visa itself – and by following proper card acceptance procedures – you can reduce fraud committed against your business. The fraud rate on Visa cards has been falling for years. In the fourth quarter of 2005, fraud accounted for only €0.00054 of each euro spent. But any level of fraud is unacceptable and Visa is determined to cut card crime further.
You should be vigilant against card fraud throughout your organisation, from making sure that your staff use correct card acceptance procedures and carry out basic security checks to securing your computer and accounting systems.
Beat fraud and protect your business
Good security begins with the basics. Your employees need to understand what a genuine Visa card looks like, and they should be able to identify its security features. They must learn how to accept both magnetic stripe and chip and PIN cards.Merchants working in Internet or Mail Order and Telephone Order (MOTO) businesses can put in place other mechanisms for card and cardholder authentication.
