Card-not-present sales

A card-not-present sale is a transaction that
takes place remotely – over the internet, by telephone or by
post.
Visa cards are especially suited to remote transactions. They
streamline the payment process, replacing more cumbersome methods
such as cash-on-delivery and invoicing. Using Visa also helps you
attract customers from all around the world.
Security
As with all forms of Visa payments, security is a crucial part
of its success. Our card-not-present security offers three security
solutions to ensure that all remote transactions can be
authenticated and protected.
- Verified by Visa is a
password-protected system that counters online fraud by verifying
the legitimacy of both parties in a transaction
- Address Verification Service (AVS)
verifies a customer’s billing address. This is currently only used
by merchants in the UK
- Card security code is the three-digit
security code on the reverse of every Visa card.
The future of card-not-present security
Chip and PIN cards have introduced a higher level of security to
our face-to-face transactions. We are now looking at ways of using
the security features that chip technology offers in the
card-not-present environment.
Dynamic passcode authentication
One solution is dynamic passcode authentication, which uses the
added security of chip cards to offer better protection against
online fraud. It validates the cardholder’s identity and the
physical presence of the card via a pocket-sized card reader
provided by the customer’s bank.

The Visa CodeSure card
The Visa CodeSure card is a standard chip and PIN card, which
incorporates a miniature keypad and display on the reverse.
Cardholders enter their PIN on the keypad to generate a one-time
code for secure authentication by Verified by Visa. This means that
the cardholder does not have to register or remember passwords. The
Visa CodeSure card can also be used for online and telephone
banking services.
These are new solutions and various banks across Europe are
running pilot schemes to assess consumer reaction.
