Card-not-present security

When a Visa card is not present during a transaction, we make use of various card verification services to authenticate and protect the transaction.

Card-not-present (CNP) transactions take place in many situations, such as e-commerce, mobile commerce and mail order/telephone order. Visa cards are ideal for such payments, offering flexibility, ease of use and convenience.

As with all forms of Visa payments, security is a crucial part of its success.

We have three solutions to authenticate such transactions:

  • Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2)
Often referred to as the ‘card security code’. This is the three-digit security code on the reverse of every Visa card – either on, or to the right of, the signature panel.

  • Verified by Visa
This is our e-commerce security solution. It is a password-protected identity checking system that has been designed to counter online fraud.

  • Address Verification Service (AVS)
This system verifies a cardholder’s billing address. It is currently only used by merchants in the UK.

Working with the European Commission

Visa Europe has been working in close partnership for many years with the European Commission – alongside banks, consumer groups, and retailer organisations – on ways to counteract both old and new trends in card fraud.

These measures have significantly helped to raise awareness among the various stakeholders and contributed to a reduction of fraud levels across Europe.

Priorities in the European Commission’s new Fraud Prevention Action Plan (FPAP) are:
  • The security of payment products and systems
  • Co-operation between public authorities and the private sector
  • The integration of new member states in the EU fraud prevention framework
  • Closer ties with neighbouring countries to Europe who affect the fraud situation
Visa Europe has considerable involvement in the overall support of the plan both in the fraud prevention expert group, the steering group and the different subgroups.

These groups will be instrumental in intensifying exchange of information and best practice to prevent fraud, especially at cross-border level.
